5HTP Description

What Is It? What is 5-HTP?

The 5HTP-Hydroxytryptophan, Pill of Happiness is a dietary supplement metabolic precursor of serotonin, which in turn is a neurotransmitter in the brain. It is produced from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is used in alternative medicine to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, insomnia, headaches, PMS and reduced appetite.

5-HTP is a short abbreiation for 5-hydroxytryptophan. This is a substance obtained by the human body from tryptophan, an essential amino acid, obtained through the food because they are not produced by the organism itself. Since the tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP, this is then converted into serotonin, a neurotransmitter directly related to the control of sleep, appetite and mood. Many diseases such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, migraine headaches, among others, are characterized by low serotonin levels. In addition the serotonin, 5-HTP may also be converted it into melatonin, another neurotransmitter, directly involved in regulating sleep.

What is 5-HTP and what are its benefits?

Since it is a precursor of serotonin and melatonin, 5-HTP may be used to achieve all the results of an improvement in the levels of these neurotransmitters such as reducing anxiety, improved mood and disposition, reducing hunger, sleep regulation, including others.

   1) Weight Loss

Human studies have associated supplementation with 5-HTP to aid in weight loss.Scientists believe that 5-HTP can lead to increased satiety after meals, causing them to eat less and consume less calories. 5-HTP (5HTP) has an incresing popularity in the diet to lose weight, since increases serotonin levels in the brain and reduces the desire to eat sweets and fats, and control appetite.

   2) Insomnia

Studies have shown that people taking 5-HTP can sleep more quickly, have a deeper sleep and sleep longer.

3) Anxiety

Although the results of studies of the effects of 5-HTP on anxiety is still not conclusive, there is evidence that it can help patients who suffer from this disease.

   4) Depression

The benefits of serotonin in the treatment of depression are already well known and many of the drugs used involve a direct action on the increase in the levels of this neurotransmissor. 5-HTP is a serotonin precursor, it was believed that it could also be auxiliary in the treatment of depression.

   5) Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by pain in muscles, tendons and ligaments, is a chronic, widespread condition. The intake of 5-HTP appears to be an aid in the treatment of disease, reducing symptoms such as pain, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety and morning stiffness.
