Health Benefits of Malic Acid

Malic acid is a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables. One of the richest sources of malic acid is the apple. This substance is naturally present in our body cells. It has many health-related benefits, such as enhance immunity, stimulate metabolism, oral health maintenance, reducing the risk of poisoning by accumulation of toxic metals (example: aluminium) and promotes a smoother and firmer skin.

Malic acid: Connection with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia

One of his most significant benefits is its ability to stimulate metabolism and increase energy production. This action is linked to the important role it plays in the process known as the Krebs cycle - in honor of Sir Hans Krebs, a British biochemist born in Germany.

Krebs won the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1953 for describing how the complex series of biochemical reactions within the body's cells by transforming proteins, fats and carbohydrates into energy and water occurs. This process requires a constant supply of vitamins, enzymes and chemical agents, such as malic acid, to maintain the body in proper operation, 24 hours a day.

The Krebs cycle is vital to our existence and without it the energy production it literally stop. Therefore, it is essential to have an adequate supply of malic acid in order to promote the efficient operation of this cycle. Malic acid plays a vital role in improving the overall muscle performance, reversing muscle fatigue after exercise, reducing fatigue, low energy levels and improves mental clarity (reasoning - brain health). These actions can make malic acid a beneficial treatment for those suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (both of these conditions involve muscle pain, joint sensitivity and low energy levels). In summary, malate acid lends itself to improved muscle performance, increase cognitive performance and increased glycogen storage. Therefore, it is also indicated to practitioners of physical activity (ex.: athletes, bodybuilders, etc.).

According to Dr. Jay Goldstein, director of the Institute of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the United States, "Malic acid is safe, cheap and should be considered in a valid therapeutic approach for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

A 6-month study conducted by scientists at the Department of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Centre - USA, examined the effectiveness of a significant dosage of malic acid and magnesium per day in 24 patients with fibromyalgia. Half the patients received the treatment, and the other half placebo only.

At the end of the study, all patients treated with malic acid and magnesium experienced significant improvements in their symptoms, including less pain, muscular rigidity, and more positive mental outlook, without any side effects. Dr. Russell who led the research scientists concluded: "The data suggest that malic acid and magnesium are safe and may be beneficial in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia."

Malic acid generates a large variety of benefits

In addition to increasing energy levels, malic acid is also a metal chelate effective. This means that are able to bind potentially toxic metals that may be accumulated in the body, such as aluminum or lead, and inactivate them. The overhead heavy metals has been associated with serious problems, such as liver and brain, causing disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Malic acid also helps to maintain oral hygiene. It stimulates the production of saliva, which reduces the number of circulating harmful bacteria in the mouth, teeth and gums. It also acts as an antiseptic, which also helps to ensure that mouth germes are kept to a minimum, and thus considerably reduces the risk of infections.

To add to the list of benefits, malic acid also helps maintain good and healthy skin. It is classified as an alpha-hydroxy acid, a term used to describe biochemical fruit acids, which are used in many cosmetics because of its ability to help exfoliate the skin and act like gentle facial peels. This helps the skin to look more healthy and firm.
